Today, we’re beaming with pride at YMCA Calgary.
That’s because Avenue Magazine named our President & CEO, Shannon Doram, one of Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40. The annual Top 40 Under 40 Award goes to a list of 40 Calgarians, all under the age of 40 years old, who have distinguished themselves professionally and are moving the city forward.
Since joining Calgary YMCA in 2011 and becoming CEO in 2017 at the age of 33, Shannon has embodied the YMCA’s values and promise, merging them with her personal mission to be a catalyst for community health and happiness.
“I believe everyone deserves to live in a strong, healthy community,” says Shannon. “So, this recognition – on top of the privilege I already have working at many levels to influence equal access to recreation in Calgary – is humbling.”
Community support for Shannon’s nomination to the Top 40 Under 40 list was truly overwhelming. From board members to community partners and colleagues, submissions spoke glowingly about Shannon’s skill, humour, and humility as a leader, and most of all, her deep commitment to making Calgary a better place for all.
Calgary YMCA’s Board Chair, Zain Velji, called out the difficult, values-driven decisions Shannon made during the pandemic. He notes, “Shannon showed that the true definition of leadership is doing the things that don’t get you credit in public, but that keep your people safe, respected, and valued, in private.”
YMCA Calgary celebrates Shannon achievement. We’re humbled, and at the same time, we’re dancing with joy about this wonderful recognition for one of our own.
