Next in our "Meet the Leaders of Your YMCA" series is Casey Plettell, general manager of Shawnessy YMCA. Casey’s journey with the YMCA is a story of growth and a commitment to embracing new challenges. From lifeguarding to leading as General Manager, Casey exemplifies the sense of community and determination that make the YMCA so special.

Can you introduce yourself and share your YMCA journey?
I’m Casey Plettell, General Manager of Shawnessy YMCA. My journey started in 2009, working in recreation as a lifeguard and swim instructor. However, things truly took off in 2017 when I became the Aquatic Coordinator, preparing for the opening of Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge.

Within a few months of the opening, I stepped into a supervisor role and later transitioned to Saddletowne YMCA to broaden my understanding of the association (and be a little closer to home). In 2021, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to become the Centre Manager of Aquatics in the South, so I made the move to Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton.

In 2023, I stepped outside my comfort zone and transitioned away from aquatics to become an Experience Manager, overseeing various program areas. That decision paid off when I was offered the role of General Manager at Shawnessy YMCA, where I now oversee the overall operations of this incredible facility.

The YMCA has always been a place of opportunity and growth, and I’ve been very fortunate to take on new challenges and learn every step of the way.

What is your favourite activity to do at the YMCA and why?
With my background, my heart is still in aquatics! I love being in and around the water, and while I’ve stepped away from aquatic roles, I still keep my lifeguard certifications up to date.

What do you believe is most special about the YMCA community?
Having worked at almost all our facilities in some capacity, I can confidently say the sense of community is what makes the YMCA so unique. It’s not just among co-workers but also extends to volunteers and members. Everyone is on a journey to better themselves and seeing that support system in action at every level is truly inspiring.

Can you share a tip for members to make the most of their YMCA membership?
What makes the YMCA special is its sense of community, so bring friends and build relationships with the people you see regularly. Even a simple hello can go a long way. Also, don’t be afraid to push yourself—step out of your comfort zone and try something new. The Y is the perfect place to grow and challenge yourself!
