Michelle Whelan, one of YMCA Calgary’s newest board members, wants to shout it from the rooftops that YMCA Calgary is more than just “gym and swim.”
Michele, a human resources executive who joined the board in May at the YMCA's Annual General Meeting, is pushing to help more people know about YMCA Calgary’s diversity of offerings.
“I want to tell everyone in the community about the great work YMCA Calgary is doing – from our youth-based programs, including leadership development, to our mentorship programs and the ways we support new Canadians,” she shares.
“I truly believe the more people know these amazing programs, the more they will want to get involved in some way, whether as a member, an employee, a donor, a partner, or a volunteer.”
Michele was drawn to volunteer with the YMCA board because of the heart she sees in the organization. “YMCA Calgary is very people-forward, ensuring that everyone can find a sense of belonging” she says.
Michele grew up in Newfoundland where there was no access to a YMCA. When she moved to Calgary 17 years ago, she was introduced to the organization when she found a spot for her two-year-old daughter in YMCA childcare.
“From the moment I walked through the doors, I knew this was an organization I could trust,” she says.
She notes the incredible caregivers her daughter had at the daycare. “She was able to experience so much there - swimming, going on adventures, using the facility every day.”
Camp Chief Hector was also a transformative experience for both of her children. When she speaks about the camp, Michele fondly recalls its inclusivity, caring and trusted staff, and character-building activities.
“I loved that the learning at camp involved mind, body, and attitude,” she says. “My kids developed a great appreciation of the outdoors.”
Michele loves how the YMCA provides opportunities for everyone regardless of their circumstances, with a particular focus on youth. “YMCA programs have been formative in the development of so many young people, helping them become amazing, contributing community members.
“Healthy kids become healthy adults.”
Pursuing a career in human resources means Michele’s professional life has been spent focusing on people and their potential. She views this as a great fit with the YMCA’s people principles. “My career and my personal approach have always been focused on seeing individuals, believing in them, helping them grow and create meaningful connections.”
She has also had a hand in helping organizations lead culture and employee development, communications, engagement and change management, making her a natural fit for our People & Governance board committee.
“I have always wanted to give back to the city that has given me so much,” Michele concludes. “Our family’s early experiences with YMCA Calgary have had a huge impact on our lives, and I am so pleased I can carry that forward into my role as a board member.”
