YMCA Calgary to Reduce Water Use Without Impacting Programs

August 21 Water Restrictions Update

Updated as of: August 26, 2024 at 3:15 PM MST

In response to the City of Calgary's request to limit non-essential water use, YMCA Calgary will be implementing water conservation efforts across all branches. We will review our operations and scheduled maintenance to further reduce water consumption by the suggested 25% starting August 26, 2024.

Our swimming pools remain open and programs, including swimming lessons, day camps, gym usage, and ice and facility rentals will not be impacted.

The following amenities will be closed as of August 26 until further notice:

  • Hot tubs
  • Steam rooms
  • Water slides
  • Flow Rider
  • Splash Amenities
  • Towel Service within Extra locker rooms

Modern-day recreation centres have several sustainability aspects designed into the buildings and the operations. Here are some ways we reduce our water consumption year-round:

  • Our LEED Gold certified facilities use recycled water in our operations where possible (e.g. using shower wastewater and pool backwashes to flush toilets).

  • Modern swimming pools recycle 100% of their water, through constant filtration and recirculation. The only water they lose is through evaporation, which through proper air temperature and humidity controls, is negligible.

  • Our washroom faucets are on sensors to limit waste, and all our showers are low flow (less than 4.5 L/minute vs. typical home shower of 10 L/minute).

We want to thank our employees, volunteers, and members for continuing to follow recommendations to reduce water use as the City of Calgary addresses these critical repairs.

We encourage you to download the YMCA Calgary app where we will share updates on any service closures. For general updates regarding the water advisory, you can find the most recent information from the City of Calgary here.

Because access to towel service and high-water use amenities, such as steam rooms, is unavailable, Extra members have the option to downgrade to a General Membership or put their membership on hold during the restrictions.

Please contact the Engagement Center or speak to customer service in person at any of our YMCA Calgary branches to make this change.
