To say board member Natasha Tiemstra is values-driven is an understatement when considering her remarkable career in the non-profit sector.
She is the current Chief Operating Officer of Ronald McDonald House in Calgary, a position she accepted following her tenure as Executive Director of the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
“Contributing to the community is really important to me,” Natasha says. “My small-town upbringing means I’ve always had a really strong sense of belonging, and I have also found that at the YMCA.”
She notes that YMCA Calgary’s approach resonates closely with that of Ronald McDonald House: building community, a sense of belonging, health and wellness, and creating the leaders of tomorrow.
Natasha also loves the YMCA because she grew up playing sports and being active. She is passionate about girls in sport because it’s a crucial way to help them gain confidence, leadership and teamwork skills, and develop healthy habits.
“As a kid, I enjoyed figure skating, gymnastics, basketball, softball, hockey, and volleyball. I loved being active and playing on teams,” she says. “It’s been such an important part of my life, and I want that for others as well.” She still makes time to play softball and volleyball because they are fun ways to get together with friends who also enjoy team sports.
Natasha grew up on a farm outside of Barrhead, Alberta, and went to school to become a Physiotherapist. She loved spending time at her hometown community recreation facilities and enjoys the similar feeling of community provided by YMCA Calgary.
“This past year as a board member has really filled my cup,” she says. “I have learned so much and am now feeling like I’m hitting my stride. I’m able to give back as much as I’m learning. I have felt very respected and valued by all the members on the board and the YMCA leadership team.”
Natasha is inspired by YMCA Calgary’s Navigate strategy, specifically, the focus on partnering with others to make a bigger impact and the commitment to long-term sustainability.
Natasha is also grateful for the many volunteers that give their time and energy to YMCA Calgary.
“We absolutely cannot do what we do without our volunteers – they are so welcoming, and make sure everyone feels accepted and like they truly belong. Their value cannot be underscored enough.”
