National Drowning Prevention Week: Safeguarding Lives Near Water

As we kick off National Drowning Prevention Week in July, the summer sun welcomes families and friends to enjoy water activities at pools, lakes, and beaches. While these moments promise fun and relaxation, they also bring an important responsibility: to prioritize water safety and prevent drownings.

Children: Vigilance and Education

Children, particularly those under five years old, are the most vulnerable to drowning. Their natural curiosity and lack of awareness around water demand constant supervision and proactive safety measures:

  • Supervision: Designate a responsible adult who can swim and is solely focused on watching children around water, regardless of whether the pool is supervised by a certified lifeguard or not.
  • Learn to Swim: Enroll children in formal swimming lessons early on. Even basic skills can make a significant difference in water safety. YMCA Calgary is proud to offer a range of swimming lessons to all ages and swimming abilities.

Inexperienced Swimmers: Know Your Limits

Inexperienced swimmers, regardless of age, should be cautious around water and aware of their limitations:

  • Swim Within Designated Areas: Stick to shallow or designated swimming areas that match your skill level. Avoid venturing into deep or turbulent waters without proper supervision.
  • Wear Life Jackets: Always wear a properly fitted life jacket when in or around the water. It's a simple yet effective way to stay safe, especially in open water. Don’t know how to properly fit a lifejacket? Come visit us and our friendly lifeguards will be happy to help you.

Adolescents and Young Adults: Risk Awareness

Adolescents and young adults often engage in risky behaviors around water due to peer influence and overconfidence:

  • Educate About Risks: Discuss the dangers of diving into shallow water, swimming alone in unfamiliar areas, and underestimating currents. Awareness can prevent tragic accidents.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol impairs judgment and coordination, significantly increasing the risk of drowning. Refrain from drinking alcohol when swimming or supervising others in or near water.

Community Engagement and Preparedness

During Drowning Prevention Week, take the opportunity to engage with your community and promote water safety:

  • Attend Workshops: YMCA Calgary aquatic staff will be in lake communities throughout Calgary and other higher risk areas to spread awareness and education about drowning prevention and staying safe when in and around the water. See below for our schedule of when and where you can find us.
  • Spread Awareness: Share these tips and strategies with friends, family, and neighbors. Encourage everyone to prioritize water safety and take proactive measures.

As we observe National Drowning Prevention Week, let's commit to safeguarding lives near water. By implementing these preventative measures—constant supervision, swimming education, life jackets, and awareness of risks—we can significantly reduce the incidence of drownings and ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for all. Together, let's make water safety a priority and protect our loved ones from preventable tragedies. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and enjoy the water responsibly. Remember, prevention starts with you.
