Sasha’s journey with YMCA Calgary is one rooted in purpose and compassion. As the General Manager of Early Years, Sasha oversees six licensed child development centres, child-minding spaces, and preschool programs—but her connection to the Y runs far deeper than her leadership role. It’s personal, it’s transformational, and it’s philanthropic.
Sasha’s first experience with the YMCA began in 2013 at Vancouver’s Nanook House, a childcare centre serving vulnerable families. “I still remember my dad asking me if I liked my job,” Sasha recalls. “And I told him, ‘I actually love my job,’ because I could see the impact.” That early exposure to the Y’s charitable mission planted a seed that continues to grow. From supporting children and foster families to helping host weekly community dinners, Sasha saw firsthand what it meant to care for the whole person and the whole community. “I felt like I was a part of their story—even as a practicum student.”
Since joining YMCA Calgary in 2019, Sasha has grown from a supervisor at Brookfield to her current leadership role, always bringing the same heart she had on day one. “I can’t imagine working at a different childcare centre. When I think back to hard days, I realize—I stay because I believe in this place. It makes me feel welcome, and I want others to feel the same.” She speaks about the Y as not just a workplace, but a second home—one that has championed her strengths, helped her grow professionally, and reminded her of the power of community.
Her commitment goes beyond the workplace. Sasha is a dedicated monthly donor and has been for seven years. “It doesn’t make sense to stop,” she says simply. “As the Y continues to provide for me and my family, I feel it’s only right to give back.” For Sasha, donating is not about obligation—it’s about alignment. “Apart from my work and leadership, this is how I give back. It’s how I show up for my community in another way.”
That sense of responsibility is something she’s eager to pass on. Sasha has supported campaigns, led fundraisers, and stood outside on cold nights with hot chocolate and joy in her heart. One of her favourite memories? Watching a group of Grade 6 students create digital messages to encourage donations. “They really put work into it. It showed me how powerful it is when young people are included in this mission.” Whether it’s bake sales, walkathons in superhero capes, or Joy Day celebrations, Sasha believes fundraising is more than raising money—it’s raising awareness.
For Sasha, philanthropy isn’t just about giving—it’s about legacy. “Being a part of someone else’s story really matters,” she says. “Even a small act, like donating, can have a ripple effect on a child’s life.” And as a leader, she’s careful to never pressure her team. “It’s not about pushing people to give. It’s about helping them understand why it matters.” She shares her own story, leads by example, and trusts that when people understand the heart behind the why, they’ll want to be a part of it too.
Outside of her role at YMCA Calgary, Sasha treasures spending time with her family, whether it's watching movies with her husband or playing board games with her children. She also loves cooking and baking, often experimenting with new recipes and watching cooking competitions for inspiration. While she doesn't enjoy the clean-up afterward, Sasha takes pride in baking cakes for friends and family, with her husband helping out after the bigger baking projects. For her, these activities provide a perfect balance of relaxation and joy.
YMCA Calgary is more than a gym or a pool—it’s a charity. It’s a trusted neighbour. And as Sasha reminds us, there’s still work to be done. “It’s not just about coming to work. It’s about giving more—because that’s what community is.” Let Sasha’s story be a reminder: when we give to YMCA Calgary, we’re investing in our neighbours, our children, and our collective future.
