On June 8, 2024, Shane Homes YMCA in Rocky Ridge buzzed with excitement as we hosted our 17th Annual Indigenous Youth Hoops Tournament!

This one-day event brought together six teams in Division 1 (ages 13 to 17) and four teams in Division 2 (ages 18 to 30) for a day of fun competition and community spirit.

The Berry Pickers took home the Division 1 Championship!

The event began with a smudge and blessing from Elder Jackie Bromley, and teams from both the city and local nations competed, with two Division 1 teams participating in their first-ever basketball tournament. Their involvement was particularly meaningful, coming from a school in Forest Lawn grappling with recent youth gun violence. Their dedicated teacher ensured their participation by organizing transportation, highlighting the importance of community support.

Special thank you to our referees, who are previous Youth Hoops Tournament participants themselves!

Initially shy, these young players soon felt welcomed and excited, thanks to our committee's engagement. They not only secured second and third place but also saw one of their peers honored as MVP. This experience was a significant positive moment in their lives, offering them a sense of accomplishment and belonging.

Division 2 showcased exceptional talent and sports leadership, inspiring the younger players. Off the court, everyone enjoyed a healthy meal provided by Calgary Rotary West, who tirelessly fed participants and other YMCA members.
